Summary:

This bitter tragedy of misplaced trust, envy, power, and filial ingratitude, begins in fairy tale fashion. Intending to divide the realm among his three daughters, the aged King Lear seeks from each a testimony of love. The malevolent Goneril and Regan utter perfunctory replies; disingenuous and loyal Cordelia rejects deception: "[I] cannot heave my heart into my mouth; I love your majesty according to my bond, no more nor less." This response elicits her banishment, plunging Lear's Britain into civil war. Stripped of his wealth and sent out into a storm to beg, Lear is transformed from a dictatorial old man to a sad and defeated wreck plagued by madness.
